J. J. Johnson is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning author, editor, and activist.
After growing up in Norwich, a small town in central New York, J. J. attended Binghamton University, where she developed her love for history, the written word, education, and social justice. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Women's Studies in 1996.
In 2001, J. J. earned a summa cum laude Master of Education from Harvard University with a focus on working with teens on peace, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
J. J. is the author of the novels THIS GIRL IS DIFFERENT, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, and BELIEVAREXIC, all published by Peachtree Publishers. Her books have received numerous honors and awards, and have been translated into six languages. Her nonfiction essays have appeared in Friends Journal, Indy, Urban Hiker, Ithaca Times, The Herald-Sun, The Star-Gazette, Evening Sun, and Coup de Tête.
J. J. is a professional editor who provides constructive, friendly, focused critique to published and aspiring writers and students. Her special interests include amplifying LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC voices and helping youth in foster care or first-generation students apply to college.
When she's not writing or editing, J. J. is a trainer for Prescriptions for Repair, a community listening project seeking to repair the harms of gun violence. She is a facilitator for Restorative Justice Durham and the Court Companionship Coordinator for Religious Coalition for Nonviolent Durham. She also serves on the Authors Circle of Book Harvest.
J. J. is an unruly Quaker who loves to travel, practice yoga, read, hike, dance, laugh, and eat. She lives with her husband, son, and rescued dog in a small brick cottage in Durham, North Carolina. There are lots of flowers and a Little Free Library in her front yard.
