Scholarship Fund for Sliding Scale Fees -
subsidizing coaching sessions one donation at a time

J. J. maintains a scholarship fund to offer a sliding scale for students with limited financial resources funded by community donations.

The fund grew from a conversation between J. J. and Amy, mother of one of J. J.'s coaching clients. Amy was happy with J. J.'s services and grateful to be able to afford them. She asked J. J. if she could pay another student's fee, anonymously, in advance. Not able to donate any more of her time than she already does, J. J. loved this idea!

"I was fortunate to be able to hire J. J. to help my senior through her college application writing process. My teen is lucky to be a good student and a good writer already but I knew she’d benefit from having another adult read her essay — and we both were smart enough to know that adult should not be me! It’s the best money I have spent in a long time.

"J. J. is not there to ghost write. She did not attempt to change or polish my daughter’s voice. She did offer sympathy, encouragement, structure (due dates!), and excellent tips for the writing process itself. She then read drafts and provided feedback on structure and flow.

"I am glad to see J. J. address the equity issue head-on. Personalized application assistance of any kind is a privilege most do not have access to, and even fewer get the benefit of paid assistance. I hope my fellow parents with the means to do so will donate generously to programs such as Jen’s that support accessibility to all income levels."
